‘Make Greenland great again’: Trump’s GOP allies in House introduce bill to authorize purchase of the land

FIRST ON FOX: President-elect Donald Trump’s Republican allies in the House of Representatives are clearing the way for him to make good on his promise to acquire Greenland.

Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., is spearheading a bill that would authorize Trump to begin negotiations with Denmark to purchase Greenland, a territory in North America but which has long-standing cultural and geopolitical ties with Europe.

According to a copy of the text obtained by Fox News Digital, the bill is titled “Make Greenland Great Again Act.”

“Joe Biden has put our reputation on the line for the last four years, and even before he takes office, President Trump is announcing to the world that America First is back. American economic and security interests will no longer take a backseat, and House Republicans are ready to do so. “Help President Trump take care of the American people,” Ogles told Fox News Digital.

This would allow the sitting president to begin talks with Denmark shortly after noon on January 20, when Trump is due to be sworn in.

“Not later than five calendar days after entering into an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark for the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, the President shall transmit the agreement, including all related materials and appendices, to the appropriate congressional committees,” the legislation states.

The Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse, meaning the executive branch cannot make purchases for the federal government without first obtaining appropriations appropriated by the House of Representatives and approved by the Senate.

Ogles’ bill is supported by 10 other House Republicans, including Reps. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., Diana Harshbarger, R-Tenn., Michael Rulli, R-Ohio, Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., Neal Dunn, R-Fla., Barry Moore, R-Ala., Randy Weber, R-Texas, and the new chair of the House Science Committee, Rep. Brian Babin, R-Texas.

While he first floated the idea during his first term in the White House, Trump has made increasingly public statements about the acquisition of Greenland and other projects such as the Panama Canal in recent weeks.

Trump indicated last week that he would not rule out taking both by force. He told a reporter who asked whether he would rule out the use of economic or military coercion: “No, I can’t assure you in either case.”

Meanwhile, the idea of buying Greenland has gained favor among Trump’s Republican allies, with proponents of the idea highlighting the country’s strategic location near Russia – one of the US’s main adversaries.

Ogles argued it was “essential to our national security.”

Ogles’ introduction is the latest move by a House Republican to help Trump achieve his foreign policy goals.

Last week, Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D., chairman of the pragmatic House GOP Main Street Caucus, introduced a bill that would allow Trump to purchase the Panama Canal. A previous bill called for the canal to be purchased for $1, but no dollar amount is included in the final draft.

That bill had more than a dozen Republican co-sponsors.
