Man, 61, charged with murder after woman, 57, stabbed in home

A 61-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman was found stabbed to death in her home in south London.

Officers were called to an address on Greenland Quay in Surrey Quays at around 3pm on Friday following reports of an attack on a woman, the Metropolitan Police said.

They arrested a man, Andrew Cunningham, from Rotherhithe, in connection with the incident and confirmed that charges have now been laid against him.

The woman killed was also identified by police as 57-year-old Margaret Cunningham.

She was taken to hospital after the attack but died later that evening.

Mr Cunningham was remanded in custody and will appear at Croydon Magistrates Court on Monday, December 2nd.

A police cordon remained at the scene Saturday evening and forensic investigators were still at the waterfront property.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, who led the investigation, said: “We received several calls from members of the public near the scene yesterday afternoon who were concerned about the victim.”

“Officers responded quickly, along with the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance, but sadly the woman, in her 60s, died in hospital last night.”

“Our specialist crime squad is continuing the investigation today and at this stage we believe this was an isolated incident in which the man and woman were known to each other.”
