Man and dog hit in hit-and-run in Absecon: police

ABSECON, NJ – A man and his dog were struck by a car in a hit-and-run accident at a South Jersey intersection just after midnight this weekend, Absecon police said.

The dog died in the Nov. 30 crash at Highland Boulevard and Marlborough Avenue, while the man, 25-year-old Syed Hoque of Absecon, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver fled the scene after the accident and a passing motorist called 911, police said.

Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and located a car matching the description provided. A traffic stop was conducted and 52-year-old Byron A. Jones of Mays Landing was taken into custody, police said.

This accident remains under investigation by the Absecon Police Traffic Safety Unit and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Traffic in the area was disrupted for about four hours following the accident.
