The girl was hit by a stray bullet and was not the intended target, according to police.
DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. – A man is charged with murder after a stray bullet struck and killed a young girl in a District Heights apartment in May.
According to Prince George’s County police, 19-year-old Chance Waters is charged with murder 14-year-old Khamya Ferrell.
The shooting occurred on May 31 just before 2 p.m.
When officers arrived in the 6600 block of Atwood St., they found Khamya and a woman inside an apartment, both of whom had been shot. A third victim, who was a man, was found suffering outside.
All three victims were taken to an area hospital. While the two adult victims survived, Khamya was pronounced dead five days later.
Police do not believe Khamya was the target of the shooting. She was reportedly hit by a stray bullet as the suspects targeted a different group of people due to an ongoing feud.
Investigators later identified Waters as one of four suspects connected to the fatal shooting. He has since been arrested and charged with first- and second-degree murder. He is currently in custody while investigators work to identify and arrest the remaining suspects.
