Man in front of gun shop points gun at mother, child in car – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — Dominique Johnson, 18, is facing charges after police said he pointed an AR-style rifle at a car containing a woman and her 1-year-old child in the parking lot of a gun store in north Charlotte.

Surveillance video shows Johnson pointing the rifle at a white car on Saturday. The gun shop is just a few feet from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s North Division building.

The woman’s husband worked at Watchdog Tactical on Harris Oaks Boulevard.

He told Channel 9 that his wife was picking him up from work, but as she pulled into the parking lot she was confronted with the tip of a gun barrel.

“This is the most terrible thing she could ever feel,” said Alex Wehner.

He is grateful that they were able to escape unscathed.

“When someone threatens my family and my loved ones, it really affects me,” Wehner said.

Johnson had purchased ammunition there before the incident, Wehner said.

“We can see he’s doing something strange out there,” he said.

Johnson walked up to a suspected Uber driver and as Wehner’s wife pulled into the parking lot, the suspect pulled out the gun and pointed it at her car, which stopped before speeding away.

Johnson then got into the waiting car and it drove off.

Seconds later, Wehner came out of the gun shop armed with a gun for protection.

“The Uber driver yells at him. I just scream at him and then they both rush away,” said Wehner.

Using surveillance video, police arrested Johnson. He also wore an electronic ankle monitor that pinged him to the crime scene.

Earlier this year, Johnson was arrested after police said he shot at a car containing five people, including three children. Nobody was injured.

Johnson was charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He managed to escape from prison and Wehner couldn’t understand how that was possible.

“The fact that someone who tried to kill five people was allowed out,” Wehner said. “I mean, it blows your mind. It makes you wonder if any of us are safe in this city right now.”

In that earlier case, Judge Fritz Mercer set Johnson’s bond at $60,000.

Mercer was on the bench again in Johnson’s latest case, and this time the judge set his bail at just $2,500.

Channel 9 reached out to Mercer’s office and asked why he continues to grant Johnson low bonds. We have not received a response.

Johnson was still in jail Wednesday afternoon.

Channel 9 also attempted to contact someone from CMPD and Uber to find out if the Uber driver was involved and if they were OK.
