preamble

Yes, yes, all humorists call it a relegation battle. But let’s be serious, so let’s not worry about them. It’s not necessarily the case that Manchester United are doing well in the uncharted territory of 15th place. But a win tonight over the doomed Saints would see them move up to 12th and within touching distance of the top half of the table. Thin pulp for a club of United’s stature and history, but this is where they are right now, even if Ruben Amorim and his men are looking up towards the light after a few street-fighting results against big rivals in Liverpool and Arsenal. Bottom side Southampton, who have lost 12 and won just one of their last 15 Premier League games and were beaten 3-0 on their own turf by United in September, will most likely settle for a worthy defeat. Then again, you never know what football is like, and the Saints have given the Red Devils an unexpected bloody nose more than once before, as this retro edition of Joy of Six shows. Kick-off at Old Trafford is at 20:00 GMT. It’s on!
