Manhattan fire: 1 civilian dead, 6 firefighters injured in Upper East Side fire

UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) – One person died and six firefighters were injured after a fire broke out at an apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Monday.

The fire broke out around 7:15 p.m. in a six-story apartment building at 526 E. 82nd St., between York Avenue and East End Avenue.

When the emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident, they discovered that there were serious fires on the fifth and sixth floors, which eventually spread to the fourth floor.

Approximately 33 units and 138 fire and rescue personnel responded to the fire, which was raised to three alarms around 7:40 p.m

The emergency services stretched several hose lines and had to tear apart walls to fight the flames.

FDNY officials say one civilian was killed and six firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The civilian, who has not yet been identified, was found in the fifth floor hallway.

The fourth, fifth and sixth floors suffered severe damage, and other parts of the building were damaged by the water.

Several residences were affected and an MTA bus will come to accommodate some of the affected victims.

The fire department will investigate the cause of the fire.
