Why this deal is recommended by ZDNET

The Marshall Woburn 3 is expensive and doesn’t offer the best value for money. But it sounds fantastic and might appeal to Marshall fans. If you’ve always wanted to get yourself the biggest and best Bluetooth home speaker from Marshall, this might be a good time to treat yourself. That’s because it’s usually not on sale, so any discount makes it a better deal than at full retail price.

Timeless look and feel

The Woburn 3 sports the signature Marshall look inspired by the company’s vintage guitar amplifiers. Weighing 7.5 kg and measuring 12.5 x 15.8 x 8.0 inches, it is a large speaker. With its timeless look and feel, the Woburn 3 in black fits into any room interior.

Plus: These Bluetooth speakers deliver rich bass and clear highs for almost every genre of music

On the top there is a faux leather surface with brass controls for volume, base and treble. They are accompanied by a power button, a playback control slider, an Aux port and another button for switching between Bluetooth, Aux, RCA and HDMI input. The front consists of a fabric speaker grille with the company’s logo, which completes the classic and elegant look.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth v5.2, HDMI, RCA and a 3.5mm jack. There is also a cutout on the back to make it easier to pick up and move the speaker when needed.

Low functionality, big sound

The Marshall Woburn 3 isn’t as feature-rich as some other speakers in this price range. There’s no Wi-Fi or voice assistant support and you miss out on AAC, AptX, LDAC and other high-resolution capable codecs. Marshall put a lot of effort into the hardware, but did a poor job of limiting support for wireless sources. If you look past that, the speaker serves its purpose fantastically.

Plus: The best soundbar and speaker deals on Cyber Monday

The Woburn 3 features a 90W Class D amplifier driving a 6-inch woofer and two 15W amplifiers. Two 15W Class D amplifiers drive the two 0.75-inch tweeters. These are all high-performance drivers.

During my testing, I had the treble and bass controls set to neutral. The speaker delivers powerful bass with the low-frequency power of the woofer. It features a bass-forward DSP that delivers details even at low volumes. At volume levels of 30% or more, you can feel the sub-bass thump. As you increase the volume, the bass remains clean and detailed.

Also: One of the best sounding speakers I’ve ever heard isn’t from JBL or Klipsch

You will enjoy rock, punk and heavy metal just as much as acoustic music. The drums feel headbanging and the acoustic sounds also sound bright and detailed. Vocals are clear and mids are detailed with sparkling highs. However, the higher frequencies tend to distort a bit at high volumes. The sound signature is very pleasant and the speaker can fill a large room at 70% volume.

When the physical controls are out of reach, the Woburn 3 can be paired with the Marshall Bluetooth app to adjust the in-app EQ. You can also use the placement compensation feature to place the speaker in the best spot in your room and adjust the sound accordingly. To get the most out of your speaker, all you need to do is answer two basic questions.

ZDNET’s buying guide

The Marshall Woburn 3 doesn’t offer the best value for money – it costs more than it offers. The drivers are capable of supporting high-resolution codecs, but if you’re looking for a speaker that excels in performance and timeless aesthetics, this is the Marshall Woburn 3 is a great deal at $499.

The large Marshall home speaker offers powerful and clear bass with rumble as well as bright highs and detailed mids. It is ideal for large rooms. But if you want something smaller from Marshall, this is the way to go Stanmore 3 is also on sale for $80 off. You can get it for just $299, with the lack of codec support still notable.
