The monstrous shadow of Galactus looms over the cosmos.

The power imbalance between Marvel’s earthly gods and its cosmic gods is incalculable. The difference in power between a mortal and a god is great. The gap between a god and

an elder god like Khonshu
is even bigger. But the gap between an older god and a A cosmic god like Galactus is incomparable. Khonshu, like most living creatures, was born to two parents into an already existing world. Son of Atum, the most powerful of the Elder Gods, Khonshu is a wondrous deity whose power directly determines the direction of mortal existence.

Marvel turns Galactus’ deadly reputation on its head with an ultimate retcon, but there’s a catch

Galactus is known as “The Devourer of Worlds” in the main Marvel Comics series, but the new Ultimate Universe turns that on its head (with a big catch).

However, Galactus was born from the death of a multiverse. Chosen by the Sixth Cosmos to absorb its energy and be reborn as a world eater,

Galactus is a cosmic construct
. He is a formless being who appears in familiar forms to reduce the mental burden of looking at what cannot be defined. Galactus is a force that ripples the fabric that holds Earth-616 together, while Khonshu merely manipulates Earth’s forces. As Moon Knight says in the issue’s narration: “Gods are not prepared for death. This is not something their kind is used to. It’s unbelievable.”

Khonshu is to Galactus what mortals are to Khonshu, exemplifying the cosmic hierarchy of Marvel Comics

The elder gods are no match for the cosmic powerKhonshu sits on a pyramid throne while men fight at his feet in “Moon Knight.”

In battle, Khonshu quickly learns where he stands, but his perseverance lasts until the end. As

Galactus increases in size
To devour the moon god with his mass, he looks to his failed herald only to dismiss him as a “god” before killing the lesser deity. No god of lower status alone has the power to defeat Galactus. Without the cosmic power to encourage them, the Devourer will always have the advantage. Even older gods like Atum or Chthon would fail under the power of Galactus.

Just as Khonshu may look down on mortals, Galactus looks down on Khonshu with the same sense of indifference.

Certainly Galactus is not infallible. Certain artifacts like

the infinity gauntlet
and All-Black the Necro Sword did their damage to the god. However, these cases are very rare. In a measure of pure strength, Galactus will always tower over those stationed below him in the pyramid of power that defines the multiverse. Just as Khonshu may look down on mortals, Galactus looks down on Khonshu with the same sense of indifference. Maybe instead of consuming planets or knowledge, Galactus can supplement his endless hunger with stubborn gods in the future.

What if…? Galactus transformed Moon Knight #1 will be available from Marvel Comics on January 15, 2025.
