Marvel star’s “best role” in “hair-raising” thriller now streaming | Movies | Entertainment

One of the best thrillers of the 21st century to date is back on Netflix and could be the perfect antidote for anyone not quite ready for the festive spirit.

With a star-studded cast, it’s a star best known for his performance as the beloved Marvel character who carries the film on his shoulders and delivers the best performance of his career.

The explosive drama begins when two young girls are kidnapped on Thanksgiving and a suspect is arrested. However, he is released shortly afterwards when the detective in charge realizes that his mental disability would prevent him from committing the crime.

Despite this, the father of one of the girls is still convinced that he knows something and takes it upon himself to hold the suspect captive and torture him until he speaks.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, now best known for bringing the Dune films to the screen, Prisoners is a must-watch thriller for those cold winter evenings (once the kids have gone to bed).

Hugh Jackman, who recently portrayed Wolverine for the ninth time, takes on the role of over-determined father Keller Dover, tapping into the same anger that made him so iconic as the unstoppable mutant.

Esquire called the performance “Hugh Jackman’s most compelling role” and wrote: “In Prisoners you see Jackman go there and then keep going and not stopping until he too is a… prisoner of his own making.”

And Collider also agreed that Jackman gave his best performance in the 2013 chiller. “Jackman remains one of the few comic book actors to possess a character virtually as intensely as Wolverine. “Jackman’s best acting role, however, exists outside of any cinematic universe and still taps into the fury that Wolverine is known for.”

They added: “The ferocity of Keller Dover, a desperate man who feels he really has nothing to lose in searching for his child, triggers in Jackman an even more grounded and compelling rage that is equal parts compassionate and is frightening.” ”

“Prisoners” has also gathered an army of fans among casual and die-hard film fans alike, all of whom agree that the heartbreaking thriller wouldn’t work without the strength of Jackman’s performance.

One fan on Reddit admitted: “I wouldn’t consider him one of my favorite actors of all time. But I enjoy every performance I’ve ever seen from him. For me, Prisoners is by far the best.

“His performance from the first scene to the last is captivating. He has raw emotions that make me forget I’m watching someone act. In the moments when his character is at the end, I feel it.

“The hairs on my arm are literally standing on end. Just his range in this film is something I haven’t seen in some actors’ entire careers. How he didn’t get an Oscar for that is beyond me.”

The film also features standout performances from other film legends such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis and Terrence Howard, with Paul Dano as Keller’s tortured prisoner.

“Prisoners” is available to stream on Netflix.
