Maryland will use AI technology to control traffic in the near future

Transportation company No Traffic claims that this technology will not only help the Maryland Department of Transportation understand where congestion regularly occurs, but will also help reduce carbon emissions and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

Maryland has been given the green light to use artificial intelligence to help manage traffic.

The company NoTraffic has developed technology that combines cameras and radar to monitor traffic conditions at intersections. It is currently used in 30 states, including California and Florida.

A series of sensors are being placed at intersections around Maryland that use cameras and radar to visualize and predict traffic flow – cameras to see the intersection and radar to track speeds and movements.

“When you put the two together, you get very precise situational awareness. But it also works in all weather conditions,” said Tom Cooper, vice president of NoTraffic.

By combining cameras and radar, traffic officers can see what’s happening at a specific intersection and track speeds and movements.

The claim is that this technology will not only help the Maryland Department of Transportation understand where congestion regularly occurs, but also help reduce carbon emissions and ensure safety for both drivers and pedestrians improve. Depending on how traffic is moving, the sensors can also interact with the signaling infrastructure to adjust lighting control.

“Nearly 41,000 Americans died in traffic accidents last year,” Cooper said. “Most of these incidents at intersections occur when someone runs a red light. The opportunity to improve safety conditions is the most exciting part of what we can offer.”

Assessment of where to introduce the technology will begin immediately and gradually Implementation expected in 2025.

“It can make the streets safer for everyone, and that’s really the most important thing about it,” he said.
