Melissa Rivers grabbed the Emmy photo of mom Joan and her dad before the house was destroyed in a fire in Palisades

Melissa Rivers is mourning the loss of family history after her home burned down in the LA wildfires.

On Wednesday, January 8, Melissa, 56, spoke to CNN as she gave an update on her family’s safety and shared what she was able to save before her home was lost – and everything she couldn’t save take.

“In my personal situation, this is it. This is the end of everything that was part of my family and its history,” she said, referring to her mother, Joan Rivers, who died in 2014, and her late father, Edgar Rosenberg, in 1987.

“To be completely honest, I grabbed my mom’s Emmy, a photo of my dad and a drawing my mom did of…my son and I,” she said. “And dog food, cat food and that’s it.”

“It’s amazing what you take with you, it’s amazing what you take with you,” Melissa continued, recalling her final moments in her home. “I chose a drawing of my mother rather than a photo because I know I can find the photos… (the drawing) that I can’t replace.”

She added: “My heart is so broken, not just for myself but for (everyone) going through this.”

A lifelong L.A. resident, she also had a “mental checklist” of what to take with her, and she “made sure we got passports, birth certificates, medication and clothing.”

“I was out shopping for clothes and suddenly I realized that… we literally only have what we have on our backs.”

Melissa first shared the news of losing her home to the wildfires in an Instagram post on January 8th.

“My family and I were able to evacuate safely and we are deeply grateful to be uninjured. I am heartbroken by the devastation caused by the fires that tragically destroyed my home 💔,” she wrote.

“I want to express my deep gratitude to the brave firefighters and first responders who tirelessly risk their lives to protect our communities and save lives.”

Melissa is far from the only star who has spoken out about the devastation they are experiencing as they watch their homes burn. Paris Hilton posted a photo from her former home in Malibu on Jan. 8 and wrote, “Heartbroken beyond words. 💔 Sitting with my family, watching the news and watching our house burn to the ground in Malibu on live television is an experience that no one should ever have to experience.

Hilton, 43, said she and her husband, Carter Reum, “created so many precious memories” in the home, including with their two children. “This is where Phoenix took its first steps and we dreamed of creating unforgettable memories for a lifetime together with London.”
