Meteorologists want to know how much snow fell in Metro Detroit. Learn how to measure and report totals here

The National Weather Service wants to know how much snow fell where you live.

“As the snow is mainly outside the region, we would welcome your reports. Respond with your location and how much snow fell,” the National Weather Service said on social media.

Anyone who measured is asked to respond to their posts on Facebook or X, formerly Twitter, with their location, the amount of snow and a photo of the snow

How to measure snow correctly

The National Weather Service offered some tips for measuring and reporting snow totals.

People should find an open, flat area protected from the wind. Measurements should not be taken on elevated surfaces or in places where the snow has already melted. It is also important to avoid taking measurements near trees and structures or in snowdrifts.

A ruler should be used to measure. You should take multiple measurements in different areas and then average the amount to the nearest tenth of an inch, the weather service said.

It’s best to try to be at snow level when taking the measurements.

After a snowfall passes, people are encouraged to measure and then report the amount, location, time of observation, and duration of the snowfall.

If you are interested in becoming an official observer, the National Weather Service recommends joining the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (CoCoRaHS).
