Mets lose with two World Series rings to ex-Yankee starter | What’s next?

DALLAS – A starter the Mets were reportedly interested in was cut by the board on Tuesday. Nathan Eovaldi agreed to re-sign with the Texas Rangers for three years and $75 million, FanSided’s Robert Murray first reported.

Considering what Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said in the winter meetings about his philosophy on free-agent starters, it’s unlikely he will The disappointed by the defeat in the Eovaldi competition. According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of the Athletics, the Rangers considered re-signing the right-hander a “priority” anyway.

The Mets have been linked to several free agents this offseason. As was the case under Stearns, they will likely sign pitchers who have potential but don’t necessarily demand a long-term contract. That’s why they look for depressed assets that have something to prove.

One of those pitchers is Walker Buehler, who pitched to a 5.38 ERA with the Los Angeles Dodgers before the playoffs and then pitched 10 scoreless innings in his final three postseason games. The two-time World Series winner is expected to receive a short-term contract similar to what Sean Manaea received from the Mets last offseason. According to The Athletic, the work is expected to be completed in about two years at a cost of $32 million.

Speaking of Manaea, the Mets are also reportedly interested in keeping him. But that could be a risky deal as he is expected to sign a four-year deal worth $76 million, according to The Athletic.

Other pitchers the Mets are reportedly interested in include Eovaldi, Nick Pivetta and Jack Flaherty.

Outside of free agency, the Mets gave Japanese phenom Rōki Sasaki a presentation highlighting why they should be a top pick for him next season.

Sasaki, who was assigned to MLB teams on Monday, qualifies as an international amateur free agent under the collective bargaining agreement. This means he is subject to the restrictions of the international bonus pool and has six years of club control.

As a result, he can decide where he goes and large market teams appear to be at a disadvantage.

Regardless of what happens in free agency, Stearns is confident the Mets have the tools to fill out a six-man rotation, with former Yankees reliever Clay Holmes becoming the Mets’ starter.
