Mexico's President asks Google not to rename the Gulf of Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that she sent a letter to Google in which the company was asked not to comply with President Donald Trump’s command to change the name of the Golf of Mexico in his Maps app into the Gulf of America.

Sheinbaum showed the letter to reporter during a press conference on Thursday. She said that her letter to Google argues that the United States cannot rename the waters unilaterally because it shares it with Cuba and Mexico. The Mexican government says that the United Nations’ Convention prescribes the law of the sea that the sovereign territory of a single country only extends up to 12 nautical miles from the coast, she said.

“If a country wants to change the name of something in the sea, it would only apply up to 12 nautical miles. It cannot apply to the rest, in this case the Gulf of Mexico. We explained this in detail, ”Sheinbaum told reporters on Thursday.

Sheinbaum also referred to a joke that she had made before and said that if the countries were renamed things, the United States should perhaps be called “Mexican America”, and quoted a map of the continent from 1607. Sheinbaum said to Google I asked the search engine to prominently displayed the map of the Mexican America.

“We ask if you put Mexican America in the search engine, the card we presented seems to be,” she said.

The step takes place after Trump signed an executive regulation last week in which the Federal Government has to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico on official maps in the Gulf of America in the Gulf of America.
