Michelsen, Tien and Van Assche win at the Next Gen finale

Next Generation ATP Finals presented by PIF – Saudi Arabia Arabia– Wednesday’s action at the Next Gen Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia saw Alex Michelsen, Learner Tien and Luca Van Assche all claiming their opening round victories.

First, Van Assche claimed a victory, ousting No. 4 seed Juncheng Shang 4-3 (3), 2-4, 4-1, 4-3 (5). With eight aces, Van Assche won 68 percent of his first serve points during the one-hour, 56-minute contest.

Michelsen next scored a four-set win over Nishesh Basavareddy, 2-4, 4-3(5), 4-3(4), 4-2.

Michelsen used his world-class backhand to great effect, scoring 27 winners in the one-hour and 53-minute encounter.

In the next game of the day, the strong Czech Jakub Mensik lost to Tien in five sets 4:3 (6), 4:3 (3), 2:4, 2:4, 4:3 (8).

Tien took two hours and 17 minutes to advance, defeating his opponent’s 24 aces and 49 winners. The 19-year-old from Irvine, California, won 67 percent of his first serve points.

Top seed Arthur Fils lost to number 8 seed Joao Fonseca, ending the day’s schedule. The number 8 seeded Brazilian defeated the Frenchman 3-4 (9), 4-2, 4-1, 1-4, 4-1.

All participants return to Jeddah on Thursday for the next round of games.
