Mid-Michigan students get a four-day weekend with a snow day on Friday | Weather

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) – Many Mid-Michigan students are having a four-day weekend with a second straight snow day on Friday.

Most schools in Huron and Tuscola counties canceled classes Thursday evening after the first major snowfall of the season occurred a day earlier.

Reports to the National Weather Service show parts of Huron County saw the most snowfall Wednesday evening and Thursday morning from an Alberta Clipper weather system that moved through mid-Michigan.

Areas in Genesee, Bay, Saginaw, Shiawassee, North Oakland and Tuscola counties received about 1 to 4 inches of snow. But a weather observer in Bad Ax reported 20 centimeters of snow on Thursday morning.

Northerly winds blowing across Lake Huron created a lake effect snowfall scenario, increasing snowfall over Huron County and the Thumb region.

A sudden freeze on Wednesday evening led to slippery road conditions, while strong winds caused snow drifts, particularly in rural areas, into Thursday morning. That led to dangerous travel conditions on Thursday.

Weather conditions are expected to weaken over the weekend, with high temperatures of over 40°C expected on Sunday and Monday. This should melt some of the snow and improve road conditions.

Snowfall ends in mid-Michigan, but wind and cold temperatures will persist Thursday

Mid-Michigan schools will close Thursday due to the first storm of the winter season
