Mikaela Shiffrin suffers abdominal injury at ski event in Vermont: “Can’t move”

Professional skier Mikaela Shiffrin suffered a stab wound to her abdomen after crashing into a fence during a ski event in Vermont.

Shiffrin, 29, was in her second run of a World Cup giant slalom race in Killington, Vt., on Saturday, Nov. 30, when the accident occurred. According to CNN, she was within sight of the finish line when she hit one gate and somersaulted before sliding into a second gate.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist was taken down the slope on a sled and transported to a medical center by ambulance, according to a statement from US Ski & Snowboard shared with X (formerly Twitter) on December 1.

“No ligament damage was found. Bones and internal organs look fine. She has a stab wound to the right side of her abdomen and severe muscle trauma,” the statement said.

Shiffrin gave a health update in an Instagram video on November 30, beginning by saying, “Hi guys, there’s actually nothing to worry about right now.”

“I just can’t move,” the record athlete continued. “I have a pretty bad abrasion and something stabbed me… And so I just can’t move. I’m so sorry to scare everyone and it looks like all the scans so far are clear. Thank you for your support and concern and congratulations to the winners and to my teammates for their incredible achievements.”

“I’m really happy for you,” she added.

Before the crash, Shiffrin was reportedly in the lead in the event, which would have marked her 100th World Cup victory. The athlete, who attended ski school in Vermont, previously spoke to Reuters about returning to the state to compete.

“I guess there’s a little bit of pressure, but I’ll try to ignore that,” she told the outlet. “When it happens, it’s wonderful; If it doesn’t happen, there’s nothing to complain about on the whole. But I hope to deliver a really good performance in front of my home crowd.”

Shiffrin suffered an injury back in January after she strained knee ligaments in a high-speed accident in Italy. Although the incident forced her not to compete for six weeks, she ultimately said she was “grateful,” noting to CNN that it could have been much worse.

Her next competition is scheduled for two weeks in Beaver Creek, Colorado, although it is currently unclear whether Shiffrin will be able to compete.
