‘Mister. & Mrs. Smith’ is ready to make history in the Ensemble category

Amazon’s acclaimed rookie drama series Mr and Mrs Smith is poised to make SAG Awards history.

Only two TV shows have ever received a SAG Award nomination for Best Ensemble – Comedy or Drama, even though the cast only consisted of two people: Comedy Key & Peele in 2016 and drama The Last of Us Earlier this year. Mr and Mrs Smith could be the third since it’s just John and Jane – as in, Donald Glover And Maya Erskinewhose characters are the heart of the series – can be included in the submission, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

This is because there are supporting actors and guest actors – including well-known personalities like Alexander Skarsgard, Eiza Gonzalez, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Sharon Horgan, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Ron Perlman And Michaela Coelas well as the mother of the series’ lead actor, Beverly Glover – not appearing in enough episodes to be listed alongside them.

To qualify for Best Ensemble Cast entry, a cast member must have a series regular contract and appear in a predetermined minimum number of original episodes airing during the calendar year and/or have a guest star bill and in a majority of original episodes appear in the calendar year. Actors with co-star billing are excluded from inclusion.

If the 2024 Emmys ceremony is any guide, Mr and Mrs Smith has a very good chance of making it to the list of five finalists for the SAG Award for Best Drama Ensemble – it was one of the eight nominees for the Best Drama Series Emmy, both Glover and Erskine were named in their respective lead actor categories and the show nominee, which entered the ceremony with 16 nominations, ended up winning two awards.

Voting for nominations for the SAG Awards will take place from December 16, 2024 to January 5, 2025. The nominees will be announced on January 8th.
