Mixed colors and material support make it good

Key insights

  • The Strip Light 2 Pro has excellent color rendering and wide compatibility with smart home platforms.
  • Govee’s app may be a little overwhelming, but it offers plenty of customization options.
  • Govee Strip Light 2 Pro’s price is higher than other options, but justified for the Matter support.

While most light bars offer good ambient lighting at a reasonable price, some are still better than others. The Govee Strip Light 2 Pro is an example that stands out from the base models, with near-universal smart home support (Matter) and beautifully blended color tones.

Price and availability

The Strip Light 2 Pro is priced at $99.99 in the 16.4-foot version and is available now. The light is available in multiple lengths, from 6.56 feet to 32.8 feet, but can be cut to various sizes if required.

The colors (most of the time) make a difference

While many other generic light strips use off-the-shelf components or share the same parts, Govee uses its own chip for bulb color and intelligent mixing. Does that make a big difference? Probably not. But the Strip Light 2 Pro seemed to have more vibrant colors than some of the cheaper strips I’ve tested in the past.

Again, the perception of colors can be somewhat subjective, but I find that the light strip provides an excellent atmosphere across its entire color range. So much so that I ended up moving things around in one of my rooms to make it fit better because I like the lighting and features it offers.

The Govee mobile app, available for iPhone and Android, is probably the best way to show off the color palette. This allows you to select different lighting styles, select scenes, and access the LuminBlend Colors section.

The color styles in this section are more nuanced in their tones and are not overly strong. For example, many options allow you to better define shades such as blue-green, forest, sea water, twilight and tan. Although I really like the color palette in the LuminBlend range, they are all a bit sparkly for my taste. For some reason they cannot be changed either.

I particularly liked a scene called “Sunrise to Sea” that started with orange and reddish hues on the left and turned to blue at the other end. Instead of a static glow there is a pulsing and flashing which I didn’t like. Govee offers a lot of controls for its lights, but I couldn’t figure out how to tweak the LuminBlend selection.

By the way, if you like the color mixing idea of this strip light but are looking for something better for high visibility areas, Govee also makes the COB strip light, which is probably best described as luxurious.

I tested the 16.4-foot model, but the Strip Light 2 Pro can also be trimmed to fit your exact needs. I didn’t go this route because I was using the strip in a room where I had plenty of space for it.

The main advantage is the matter

While I really like the Strip Light 2 Pro’s color tones and general lighting presentation, one of its big selling points is its Matter support. I’m at the point where I almost won’t consider any product that doesn’t support Matter’s ability to connect to all major smart home platforms, including Apple’s HomeKit.

It’s worth noting that if you use the Strip Light 2 Pro exclusively through an app like Apple Home, you’ll miss out on all the scenes and customizations available in Govee’s app.

This is fine for my situation as I mainly need Home support for Siri voice control. So I’m still using Govee’s Advanced Scenes, but I also need my wife to be able to ask Siri to turn off all the lights in the attic without having to worry about what manufacturer the lights are or what app they’re using .

Should you buy the Govee Strip Light 2 Pro?

The Govee Strip Light 2 Pro is great. I have almost no complaints about it. It outperforms cheaper light strips with brighter and more mixed colors. It supports Matter and therefore works equally well with Apple HomeKit and other platforms.

The most important consideration is not the performance of the product, but its price. The full retail price of $99.99 for the 16.4-foot version is a bit high compared to other base options. But if you’re like me and really want Matter compatibility then it might be worth it.
