Monson has 10 inches of snow and is experiencing power outages

MONSON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Monson was hit hard by Wednesday night’s snowstorm, bringing about 10 inches of snow.

We headed to the area to contact the city’s highway department, who told us they were prepared for snow, as it typically gets more snow than other parts of the region.

“I get a lot of freezing rain up here, so my driveway gets slippery, so I have to salt it,” resident Susan Cocchi told us.

Road pretreatment was critical for the City of Monson as our First Alert meteorologists predicted that Monson would be one of the areas to receive the most snow late Wednesday evening into the early hours of Thursday morning.

Monson Highway Surveyor Ben Murphy says preparations for the snow began around 10pm last night

“We started preparing, driving the main roads and then waiting for about an hour expecting it to snow lightly, but it was heavier,” he explained. “It was a very wet snow, plus we had some tree damage in between all of that, a very wet snow.”

Power outages across the city left only about 25 customers without power.

“There were only two failures; In that respect, we were lucky that we didn’t lose that much juice.”

The highway authority said it had pushed back the snow and had already treated the roads to prevent the snow from freezing overnight.
