Montclair Op-Ed: Create “fair ballots” for future elections

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The following letter to the editor was kindly provided by the League of Women Voters of the Montclair Area. Learn how to post announcements or events to your local patch site.

On December 2, 2024, the New Jersey Legislature’s Assembly Committee on Ballot Design will hold a virtual hearing to hear public input on adopting a fair and neutral ballot design for future elections. The League of Women Voters of the Montclair Area, along with many partners, members and volunteers, has advocated for a fair, neutral and accessible ballot box design that does not unduly influence voters’ choices.

The best way to achieve this is to implement an office building layout. The current district line layout highlights candidates the party supports. A fair ballot is a simple ballot that is clear, easy to understand and accessible to all voters, without unnecessary design elements that could influence voters’ decisions. For fair elections, neutral voting is essential and candidates supported by the party must not be favored.

Wir fordern die gesetzgebende Körperschaft von New Jersey auf, diesen Änderungen Priorität einzuräumen und ein faires und transparentes Abstimmungsumfeld zu schaffen, das die Wähler und den demokratischen Prozess würdigt. We also urge voters to attend the virtual committee meeting on December 2nd and petition their legislator.
