Morgan Wallen's criminal case takes a step forward

The criminal case against country superstar Morgan Wallen has taken a step forward.

Wallen, who is accused of throwing a chair from the sixth floor of a Broadway honky-tonk in April of this year, did not appear at the Nashville courthouse Tuesday morning.

Instead, his attorney, Worrick Robinson, told the judge that Wallen was waiving his right to a preliminary hearing and grand jury presentation. The case will now be transferred to the Criminal Court, a step above the General Sessions Court where his case was heard.

The move is mostly procedural in nature, but it means that some details of the case that normally emerge during a preliminary hearing, when witnesses and officials are called to testify, will not be revealed — or at least not yet.

The case will be referred by General Sessions Judge Jim Todd to one of Nashville’s six criminal judges.

Meanwhile, according to Robinson, Wallen is trying to resolve the case with prosecutors.

“The next step is to reach an agreement with the party and all parties and find a court date to resolve the issue,” Robinson said.

According to court documents, it was minutes before 11 p.m. on April 7 when police officers standing outside the Chief’s Bar saw a chair fly down and crash into the street just three feet away from two officers.

The chief’s staff told officers that Wallen was responsible for the chair throw, and security video from the bar’s roof showed the country singer throwing an object over the roof, according to a police affidavit. Witnesses said they saw Wallen laughing afterward, the affidavit said.
