Morning Report: Jason “Mayhem” Miller “lends a helping hand to Nick Diaz”

Jason Miller knows the ups and downs of martial arts.

The longtime MMA veteran has faced a number of trials and tribulations in recent years, including numerous violations of the law that resulted in prison sentences and hefty fines. In September 2023, “Mayhem” released a public statement describing his life as “terrible.”

Since then, Miller has managed to stay out of trouble and even returned to the MMA world with podcast appearances. Given how much his life has changed in a year, Miller was asked in an interview with Helen Yee if he had any advice for fellow fighter Nick Diaz. The older Diaz brother was scheduled to fight at UFC 310 this Saturday, but pulled out of a bout against Vicente Luque for undisclosed reasons.

Shortly thereafter, a video surfaced of Diaz exhibiting erratic behavior, leading to speculation about turmoil in his personal life. Whatever the case may be, Miller wants Diaz to know he is there for him.

“Listen, we all saw what we saw and I don’t want to dwell on it too much,” Miller told Yee. “I think the people in Nick’s life need to come together. Anyone who ever made any money off of him needs to come over and help this guy. We’ve had our best since we were kids, but that doesn’t stop me from helping this guy when he needs it. And if he is not ready to accept a helping hand, you all have to keep an eye on him. The people close to him, his brother, his family, his friends, everyone who made money with him, he needs you now. He needs a circle back.

“That doesn’t speak badly of him, it’s a tough sport we play and it’s easy to stumble over the wrong things. Super easy. And it is even more difficult to get out of this situation, so my advice is not for him, but for the people around him who will help him find a better place in his life.”

Miller and Diaz are known more as rivals than friends. At a Strikeforce event in April 2010, following Shields’ victory over Dan Henderson, Miller faced rival Jake Shields, resulting in a post-fight brawl involving Miller, Shields, and Nick and Nate Diaz.

Despite her turbulent past, Miller can understand what Diaz might be going through, especially given his own struggles.

“I wish someone had done it for me sooner,” Miller said of his need for help. “They did and I finally accepted the help and now my life is getting better and better… I’ve been through all these hard things with substances. It’s super easy to stumble into, it’s so easy, especially when you’re used to the bright and crazy, exciting lights – the combat is like nothing else.”

“There’s something in you that once you have this super exciting thing in your life, and if you don’t do it all the time, then very quickly you slip into something that makes you feel that way, and I don’t believe that.” We should judge people for that,” Miller added. “I think we should help them if we can.”
