Motorists in Alabama are reminded to “winterize” their cars with professional help

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Auto experts want drivers to take advantage of the expertise of trained professionals as they prepare their vehicles for the winter months.

“This time of year we always encourage people to winterize their cars, and by that we mean take them to a certified technician to check a number of things for you,” said Clay Ingram with AAA Alabama.

It’s well known that the cold air can cause the vehicle’s tire pressure to drop, but according to AAA, under-inflation increases the risk of tire failure.

There are also parts under the hood that require attention.

Ingram recommends having the fluid level checked and possibly replaced. This includes antifreeze or coolant, washer fluid, oil and transmission fluid.

He also suggests hiring a technician to inspect people’s belts and hoses. AAA Alabama says these have a tendency to deteriorate and wear out from the inside out, potentially leaving people in the lurch.

According to Ingram, the battery is the biggest problem in the car. He said it hates the cold air but there is technology to prevent any problems.

“You can get in ahead of time and there are these great battery testers now that can tell you the general health of your battery, whether it’s in good condition, whether it’s in the middle, or maybe it’s already at the end of its life and may need to be replaced become.”

According to Ingram, most car batteries only last about three years, so regardless of the weather, it might just be time for a check.
