SPRINGFIELD, MO – Motorists in northern and central Missouri should prepare for dangerous travel conditions as snowfall blankets the region. A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of the I-70 corridor. 3 to 5 inches of snow is expected today. The peak of the impact is expected between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will affect areas near Columbia, Jefferson City and east toward St. Louis. The advisory warns of limited visibility and slippery roads, especially during afternoon driving. Motorists are urged to allow extra time and check updates from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) before driving.

Road conditions are expected to worsen in “moderate impact” zones, as highlighted on the NWS travel map. Drivers are advised to reduce speed and maintain a greater distance between vehicles. Anyone traveling long distances on I-70 should expect possible delays. Smaller disturbances also extend south toward Springfield.

Looking ahead, Sunday will bring a break from the snow, with partly cloudy skies and highs around 40°F. However, subfreezing overnight temperatures could refreeze untreated surfaces, creating additional challenges for early commuters on Monday morning.

The week ahead looks calmer, with mostly dry conditions through Wednesday before a chance of rain or snow again towards the end of the week.
