MTA reveals the first new map of the U -Bahnen in NYC since 1979 – NBC New York

First, transit officers in New York City said goodbye to the Metrocard.

Now the MTA says goodbye to another transit symbol: the famous U -Bahn card.

“This is a lynchpin moment,” said Janno Lieber, Chairman and CEO of MTA, who has observed the unveiling of the first major map overhaul of the system since 1979. Today the card and graphics team of the Authority Transportation installed them at the Times Square Station. In the coming weeks, 22,000 paper cards will cover the system in every car every train and in every train station.

“You can talk about the Bronx -Time Square, the Statue of Liberty,” said Demetrius Crichlow, the New York Transit President, who is a further iconic addition to the list of the list of New York.

“Puts all points of everything you have to see in New York,” he said.

The new cards are a tribute to Vignellis Design from 1972. With shining fat -containing colors for each U -Bahn line. And wide lines to see them easier.

The MTA has been asked for feedback from focus groups in the past few weeks – and got an ear. The transfer hubs were not as clear as possible, said the feedback. So they added new markings to make it clear. For example, at the Union Square you can switch from the R -Zug to the 5 -train without leaving the train station.

“There is a lot on this map that will make it easier for people to see it,” said Andrew Albert, an MTA board member who consulted with the art team to ensure that they reacted to commuter concerns. For example, he advised them to ensure that the L -Zug moved south towards Canarsie.

Many drivers celebrated the revised look. But Kathleen McCabe, a resident of Manhattan who has been using the U -Bahn system for decades, was not impressed.

“I hope you didn’t spend a lot of money on it,” she said.

The MTA says that it cost “almost nothing” and because they used existing employees, it was a “four -digit edition”.

And other drivers seemed to be satisfied.

“You could see it much better and more clearly,” said Wells Brown, a daily commuter from Flatbush.
