MTA subway stations get metal fins in latest effort to curb tax evasion – NBC New York

New Yorkers taking the subway may soon see spiky new additions to the turnstile gates.

The MTA said newly installed sharp metal barriers are intended to deter turnstile jumpers. The installation is part of the city’s plan to prevent tax evasion.

According to the MTA, the subway spikes are currently being installed at the 59th Street-Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street-Times Square subway stations.

In 2022, the MTA estimated that fare and toll evasion cost the transit agency nearly $700 million.

When reached for comment on Saturday, an NBC New York spokesperson referred to a May 2024 press release detailing the hub fin pilot — one of many approaches to solving what the agency sees as a costly and systemic problem .

The “fins” installation is not the only method used to curb straphangers who overcharge the fare. The MTA extensively uses “gatekeepers” positioned at emergency exit gates to prevent people from crowding as they leave the station.

The move comes as drivers brace for another price hike.

Late last year, the MTA approved its biennial fare hike for subway riders. The current fare of $2.90 is expected to rise to at least $3 next August.

The last increase in 2023 saw the fare rise 15 cents from $2.75 to the current $2.90.
