Murder suspect in custody after SWAT standoff at Baytown hotel

BAYTOWN, Texas – A wanted murder suspect is in custody after a standoff with law enforcement at a Baytown hotel.

According to John Nanny of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, authorities received information that a man wanted for a murder that occurred on Uvalde Road several weeks ago was at the Baytown Super 8 Hotel at 1931 East Freeway.

Because it was suspected that the suspect may have been armed with a rifle, the SWAT team was called to the scene. After about two to three hours, the suspect surrendered.

“After we confirmed he was here, we tried to get him to come out and surrender peacefully. It took a while, but after a few chemical munitions deliveries, he finally surrendered,” Nanny said.

Nanny said that after chemical munitions were fired through the window of the hotel room where the suspect was, they broke down the door, at which point the suspect surrendered.

No one else was in the hotel room with the suspect.

The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Adrian Reeves, 35. He was booked into jail on the murder warrant.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that Reeves will be charged in connection with the death of Tomas Newman.

Gonzalez said Reeves allegedly shot Newman on Nov. 26 after Newman checked on a neighbor’s house.

“Reeves apparently went to the location looking for someone he had conflicts with, but instead ran into Newman,” Gonzalez said.
