Murder suspects responsible for 30% of local murders: police officers

Two Alabama men arrested by Birmingham police are believed to be responsible for nearly a third of the city’s murders in the summer of 2024.

Damien McDaniel, 22, and Hatarius Woods, 27, were arrested in connection with the suspected murder of Charlie Moore, 61, on Aug. 13, according to a news release from Birmingham police. Both men are being held without bond.

In a news conference on November 26, Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald provided details of even more murders in which both men were allegedly involved, stating that “approximately 30% of the murders committed from July to September” One of the two men is related to this.

Both suspects were also named in connection with a mass shooting at a nightclub on July 13 that left four people dead: Lerandus Anderson, 24; Stevie McGhee, 39; Markeisha Gettings, 42; and Angela Weatherspoon, 56 – and at least ten injured. McDaniel and Woods were charged with murder.

McDaniel was originally arrested in October in connection with another quadruple mass shooting on Sept. 21 that killed Carlos McCain, 27. Roderick Lynn Patterson Jr., 26; Anitra Holloman, 21; and Tahj Booker, 27. Seventeen other victims were injured. McDaniel was also charged with the murders of Jamarcus McIntyre, 32, and Diontrante Tinae Brown, 35.

In outlining the stack of charges against McDaniel and Woods, Fitzgerald put the number of Birmingham murders allegedly linked to McDaniel at “as many as 11.” Police also suspect McDaniel and Woods may be connected to a number of other unsolved murders, including possible contract killings, and have urged local residents to provide any information they have.

Fitzgerald noted that more than 300 tips were received from the public in connection with the Sept. 21 shooting, which ultimately led to law enforcement obtaining an arrest warrant for McDaniel. Other suspects in the shooting are still at large.

During his press conference, Fitzgerald emphasized the importance of the arrests of McDaniel and Woods.

“We often say at these crime scenes that we have a select few criminals who are contributing to this crime and giving Birmingham a bad name,” he said. “Of our murders that occurred from July to September, about 30% involved the name of one of these people. So more than a quarter of murders in Birmingham are committed by a select few. When we say about these things that it is important for us to get these violent criminals off the streets, this is the perfect example of that.”
