My favorite entry-level racing wheel is the best price all year

The G29 from Logitech has been one of my first recommendations for many years for those looking for a reliable entry-level racing wheel with decent force feedback, solid features and excellent comfort. Before upgrading earlier this year, I had continued to use it in a number of titles, including my beloved Assetto Corsa. As part of Black Friday, Amazon has reduced the humble G29 to a whopping £179, which is a big saving on its usual list price of £259.

Next to the G920, the Logitech G29 is probably the better equipped version of the pair of wheels that the Swiss brand produces, as unlike its sister model it has speed indicators, plus/minus buttons and a rotary controller. The G29 works with both PlayStation and PC, and I’ve been using my G29 on the latter for about seven years. This steering wheel was my introduction to sim racing and for good reason it can be yours too. I’ve used one from Assetto Corsa, Automobilista, Richard Burns Rally and Euro Truck Simulator 2 and it helps provide a lot of immersion at a lower cost. It’s a well-made option with a solid plastic base and pedals, as well as steel construction on the paddle shifters and pedals. Combined with this, the hand-stitched leather trim is comfortable to use and the button layout makes sense, with plenty of options for mapping inputs, particularly with the addition of the dial and plus and minus buttons. I usually assign the rotary knob to an ignition start, and on cars with controllable boost levels I switch the boost with plus and minus in the Assetto Corsa.

There’s 900 degrees of rotation available, while the gear-based force feedback is decent. It may not be as well executed as a direct drive equivalent, but these cost quite a bit more than the G29, and for most people the force feedback on offer here should be fine. It may seem silly to say this, but the fact that you get a dedicated clutch pedal is a bonus as some options like the Thrustmaster T128 don’t have one, which seems a bit odd. For more clutch pedal immersion on non-sequential transmissions, you can also grab a dedicated Logitech G Driving Force shifter (reduced to £30 on Amazon), which I think is an essential accessory for use with vehicles that have an H- Gear levers, be it a truck or a historic racing car. I usually deal with historic pre-war vehicles from the 1920s and 1930s or hurling stuff up the Goodwood Hill Climb on the Assetto Corsa, but your mileage may vary.

Overall, £179 for a full set of wheels and pedals isn’t a bad price, especially for something as solidly priced as the Logitech G29. If you want to grab a fantastic road bike at a real bargain price, this Amazon deal is worth checking out.
