A good multi-tool can be a reliable companion for decades (as long as you don’t lose it!).

I like having a good multi-tool handy. While they can’t replace a proper tool kit, I don’t feel like carrying a full tool kit with me when I’m on the go. Many of my readers are like me and need to complete random and unplanned DIY tasks throughout the day, so having a portable tool kit that can handle the basics is essential.

Not a week goes by without someone asking for my multi-tool recommendations. My advice is always the same: look at something Leatherman or Tanner must offer and ignore the rest.

Why? Two reasons: warranty and repairability.

Take my familiar Leatherman Free P4. I chose this model for three reasons: it has all the tools I need, the wire cutters are user replaceable so I don’t need a warranty on the tool to repair it, and it has a long warranty of 25 years.

And these are real guarantees. I know because I’ve had to use them a few times over the years. I use and abuse my tools – after all, any tool can replace a hammer if you’re creative enough! As a result, I managed to break a few blades and even the pliers. But each time the problem was solved promptly and to my complete satisfaction.

Assuming you don’t lose your multi-tool – don’t be like the guy writing this who managed to lose two multi-tools in so many years – then you’ll have a reliable companion for decades.

The next thing to consider is repairability. The wire cutters on every multi-tool I own are completely broken. I use them not only for cutting wires, but also for cutting small bolts, nibbling metal, and gnawing through screws. They experience a very hard life. Therefore, these parts must be user replaceable, otherwise I would replace or warranty the tool every time the blades become damaged.

Fortunately, there are replacement blades for this Leatherman And Tanner Multi-tools. The cutters are easy to replace, so you can get your tool back to new condition in no time.

I replaced the blades on my Leatherman in about five minutes and for about $12.

ZDNET’s buying guide

Personally, I don’t recommend spending money on cheap multi-tools. It’s false economics and a classic case of “buy cheap, buy twice.” I was sent dozens to test, and all were poor quality, disappointing, or even dangerous. That’s why I don’t recommend them.

Some people have told me that they would buy an inexpensive device for the car or home to use in an emergency. However, the last thing you want to rely on in an emergency is a cheap tool!

Take advantage of this Black Friday offer and get yourself one Leatherman Free P4 to see it for yourself.
