Nevada police are backing a bill that would make traffic violence a crime

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Nevada State Police are pushing a bill to make traffic violence a misdemeanor.

The bill imposes fines and possible prison sentences for offenders. Drivers could also lose their license or even their vehicle.

Metro police say they have seen a rise in road rage. There have been at least two road rage shootings in the last few weeks alone, including one on the Las Vegas Strip that ended in death.

SB37 states: “Under this law, a person commits traffic violence if he or she is the driver or passenger of a vehicle and occurs in response to or escalates in response to an incident occurring on a highway or on a property to which the public has access , she or … she: (1) commits an assault on the driver or occupant of another vehicle, or (2) knowingly operates a vehicle in a manner intended to intimidate, harass, frighten the driver, to alarm or alarm; Finally, this bill provides that a person who commits a traffic offense is guilty of a misdemeanor for a first offense and a gross misdemeanor for a second or subsequent offense, with graduated penalties which may include: (1) a fine; (2) imprisonment in the county jail for up to 364 days; (3) revocation of the person’s driver’s license; (5) seizure; the vehicle used by the person for a specific period of time.”
