New England Revolution acquire striker Leonardo Campana from Inter Miami CF

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (December 19, 2024) – The New England Revolution acquired striker Leonardo “Leo” Campana (pronounced le-oh-nar-doh cam-PAH-nah) from Inter Miami CF in exchange for $2,000,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM), $500,000 in 2026 GAM, one 2025 International Roster Slot and one 2026 International Roster Slot. Miami will retain a resale share of any future sale from Campana and could receive up to $750,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based incentives are met.

Campana, 24, adds an established goalscorer to New England’s attack as the Ecuador international joins the Revolution after a record-breaking season with Inter Miami that saw him win the 2024 Supporters’ Shield and 2023 Leagues Cup. With the Herons from 2022 to 2024, Campana scored 32 goals and eight assists in a total of 100 appearances. In the MLS regular season, the striker scored 28 goals in 80 league games with eight helpers, which corresponds to an average of 0.80 goal contributions per 90 minutes played.

“Leo Campana is a proven goalscorer whose arrival strengthens a crucial position for our team as we work to improve our offensive production this season,” said sporting director Curt Onalfo. “Leo is a striker we have been keeping an eye on for quite some time, so we are delighted to have him at our club. We are pleased to have completed another important piece of the puzzle before the start of preseason.”

Last season, Campana scored eight goals and three assists in 28 games, including 14 starts, helping Miami set the MLS single-season points record with 74 points, previously held by New England. In his first season with Miami, he was the team’s second-highest scorer with 11 goals in 1,592 minutes played.

“Leo has proven to be a consistent goalscorer in our league and scores goals in a variety of ways. He is strong in the air, intelligent in his movements, good in the penalty area and has the technical ability to score goals himself,” said head coach Caleb Porter. “Leo is another signing who is in the prime of his career and is hungry and capable of achieving even more. I’m looking forward to being on the field with him in January.”

Born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Campana began his career in 2016 with his former youth club Barcelona SC. In January 2020 he moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League, which was followed by loan spells at FC Famalicão (Portugal) and Grasshopper Club Zurich (Switzerland). Campana scored two goals in nine Liga Portugal games with Famalicão before scoring three goals in 15 games during his six-month spell with the Grasshoppers. Across all competitions, the left-footed striker has scored a total of 41 goals and provided 12 assists in 146 senior games.

At international level, the 1.80 meter tall attacker has made 16 international appearances for the Ecuadorian men’s national team, most recently in October 2024 during qualifying for the FIFA World Cup. Campana made his senior debut for Ecuador in March 2019 in a friendly against the United States. In total, he played four times in World Cup qualifying and four times in the Copa América. At youth level, Campana was successful at the 2019 South American U-20 Championship, leading the tournament with six goals in nine games for the eventual winners. In total, he scored seven goals in 23 appearances for Ecuador at U-23 and U-20 levels.

Campana will be with the Revolution when pre-season training begins in early January, before the 30thTh The Major League Soccer season begins on Saturday, February 22nd.
