The source of dozens of mysterious drone sightings over parts of New Jersey remains a mystery, but the Federal Aviation Administration is issuing two new “no-fly zones” over the Garden State.

Drones are considered aircraft. Airplanes and airspace are strictly regulated by the FAA.

On Monday, the FAA issued a ban on drones flying over the Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster and the Picatinny Arsenal military base in Rockaway.

The FAA was asked repeatedly about reports of drone flights over parts of Morris County and declined to comment.

When the new rules were published, an accompanying statement said: “We review all reports of unauthorized drone operations and, if appropriate, investigate.”

However, the FAA did not specifically say it was investigating the drone flights over Morris County.

However, the agency noted that anyone endangering aircraft or pedestrians with a drone could be fined up to $75,000 and lose their drone operator’s pilot licenses

FBI officials in Newark confirmed last week that they have begun investigating the mysterious drones that have been making people nervous since at least November 18th.

Many questions, few answers

There have been reports of individual drones hovering over people’s homes for hours.

According to other reports, the drones are often grouped in groups of up to eight people.

Because the drones fly most often at night, it’s difficult to estimate their size, but some have described them as being as big as a small car.

There are often lights flashing, usually in a triangular pattern.

When people first reported the drones over Morris County last month, the district attorney and local law enforcement confirmed the drones were in the air but said there was no cause for concern.

At the time, there were reports on social media that the drones were being followed by a helicopter.

The district attorney’s office, along with local law enforcement officials and the county sheriff, issued a joint statement to counter what they said were “rumors circulating on social media.”

“We encourage the public to be aware that what they read online may not be accurate,” the statement said.

A spokesman for the Picatinny Arsenal referred questions about the drone flying over the military base to the FBI, but said they did not believe the drones posed a threat.

The bans are not permanent

The FAA guidelines include expiration dates, but these can be extended.

Trump National’s ban expires on December 6th.
