New Jersey Weather: Up to 6 inches of snow is forecast for this weekend’s winter storm

A winter storm expected to hit New Jersey on Sunday could dump 4 to 6 inches of snow across nearly half the state before dangerously cold temperatures next week.

“The greatest potential for significant accumulations remains for areas along the I-95 corridor and to the north and west,” the National Weather Service said in its forecast discussion Friday morning.

Meteorologists assume that the path and strength of the storm could still change due to contradictory forecasts from weather models.

“Forecasts still vary significantly considering it is only 48 to 60 hours away,” the weather service said.

Counties south and east of the I-95 corridor are expected to see 2 to 4 inches of snow. Total snow forecast drops to 1 to 2 inches closer to the Jersey Shore and Delaware Bay.

According to the weather service, snow could begin as early as Sunday morning and continue throughout the evening at rates of up to 1 inch per hour.
