New Jersey woman burned to death after Dunkin’ Lid accident

A New Jersey woman claims she suffered permanent injuries after hot coffee was spilled on her because Dunkin’ employees allegedly put the wrong lid on her cup.

Zina Lewis, an East Orange resident, purchased the coffee on July 15 at a Dunkin’ location on Goffle Road in Hawthorne, according to a personal injury lawsuit filed in state court. The lawsuit alleges that the lid was not properly secured so it came off when she tried to drink, resulting in scalding liquid spilling onto her body and limbs.

Lewis claims the incident caused “severe and painful injuries” both internally and externally, leaving her unable to resume normal activities. She reportedly required surgical treatment for the burns and was informed that some injuries could be permanent, the lawsuit says. Additionally, Lewis claims the coffee was excessively hot, exceeding industry standards and making it unsafe for public consumption.

The lawsuit accuses Dunkin’ of negligence and neglect for serving dangerously hot coffee in a cup with a defective lid. Lewis is seeking compensation for her medical costs and has requested a jury trial. The lawsuit, filed Nov. 15, names Dunkin’ and several unidentified employees and corporate entities.
