New Jersey’s Gas Tax Is Going Up Again: Here’s How Much You’ll Pay at the Pump

Consider it your annual donation to the pothole paradise we call home.

This increase, which brings the total tax on gasoline to 44.9 cents per gallon (diesel drivers pay 51.9 cents), is part of the state’s plan to fund critical transportation projects. Do you want smooth roads and stable bridges? Someone has to pay, and spoiler alert: it’s you.

“Based on our review of consumption data, combined with the requirement to meet the new statutory target, we have determined that the new formula calls for a 2.6 cent increase next January,” State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio explained, likely while speaking calculated how much coffee you can still afford on your gas budget.

This increase comes from the 2024 Chapter 7 Act, which ensures the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) has the resources needed to invest nearly $11 billion in roads and bridges over the next five years.

The tax increase includes adjustments to the Petroleum Products Gross Receipt Tax (PPGRT), which will rise from 31.8 cents to 34.4 cents for gasoline and from 35.8 cents to 38.4 cents for diesel. Combined with the fuel tax, which doesn’t vary from 10.5 cents for gasoline and 13.5 cents for diesel, these changes could make you think twice about that extra car trip.

So when you pull up to the pump in 2025, remember: Every drop of gas brings us closer to pothole-free roads… or at least a few fewer bumps on your morning commute. Cheers to that!
