New York Giants WR Malik Nabers has a long history with Shedeur Sanders

The New York Giants are 2-11 after 14 weeks of this miserable 2024 NFL season and are on track to go second overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.

If that happens, a top quarterback would be within reach. Depending on which team – or teams (if any) – are in front of them will determine who falls victim to them.

Whoever the Giants fall victim to will have the pleasure of throwing passes to wideout Malik Nabers next season.

Nabers was asked if he preferred any of the quarterbacks he saw in college this year, most notably Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward. Both are Heisman Trophy finalists.

“No, I’m not in a relationship with any of these guys,” he said. “But when I was younger I went to Deion Sanders’ camp and stuff. I know about Shedeur. I watched a few games on Cam. These guys are great players.”

Nabers then recalled his experiences in the Sanders camp.

“We actually played in it, it was like a camp, the day after it was like a 7-on-7 camp. We met Shedeur in the final. Actually, (LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier) Nuss was my quarterback at the time in camp. “We all went to the championship game against Shedeur,” he said, revealing that his team won the game.

Nabers predicts Shedeur’s Colorado teammate, wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter, will take home the Heisman on Saturday. It is the safest choice.

“He’s a unique player right there. “You don’t see guys like that who can play at a high level like him, especially as a cornerback and receiver,” Nabers said. “He touched 1,000 yards as a receiver, which is pretty difficult. And I think he also has double-digit touchdowns as a receiver.

“So that’s hard, especially when you go into the game knowing that the defense is working on you to be as explosive as he is. He then goes on defense and blocks his side of the field. You don’t want to blame him. He is still capable of getting interceptions and stopping receivers.

“I think this is a unique player. For him, he is the best player in college football. If you can play both teams at a high level like he did, there is no doubt.”

Hunter is the wild card in this year’s draft class. The first team not looking for a quarterback will sign him.

The Giants could certainly use Hunter. You have to be explosive on both sides of the ball. Adding him would go a long way. But that would mean bypassing the quarterback position, a decision that wouldn’t go down well with the long-suffering fan base.

If the Giants end up with one of the first three picks, they will get one of those three players. Sanders and Ward are the most likely. Nabers would accept both, but had this to add about Shedeur.

“I saw Shedeur when he was at Jackson State,” he said. “Me and him were in the same class. So it’s always been the case that I’m aware of my competition. But he wasn’t in competition with me, it was just always the fact that he was Deion Sanders’ son. So you always want to watch what these guys are doing. And they did it at a high level everywhere. It was amazing and impressive to see what he achieved.”

At least it will be an interesting end to the season and the off-season.
