New Yorkers host a lavish Thanksgiving dinner in the middle of the subway car

A group of New Yorkers hosted what appeared to be a lavish Thanksgiving dinner in the middle of a subway car in the city on Thursday.

Footage of the unusual dinner somewhere in Midtown Manhattan made the rounds on social media (of course). Five people attended, sitting on metal chairs around a table with a patterned tablecloth and covered with bowls of food in a subway car, which was captured in a video posted to TikTok. One guest at the end of the table was carving the turkey while others sat around eating what appeared to be potatoes, corn and other Thanksgiving staples.

Salivating fellow commuters watched, some taking photos and videos of the spectacle.

The TikTok user who posted the video captioned it: “When your apartment in New York isn’t big enough to host Thanksgiving dinner.”

Shortly after the video went viral, a TikTok account called “@body_388” posted an ad for the Sweetlife NYC dispensary using footage of the same Thanksgiving dinner. The ad showed guests holding up “Sweetlife” products as they enjoyed the rolling feast.

The Independent asked the account for comment.

This isn’t the first time a Thanksgiving feast has been served on a New York City subway.

Last November, organizers set up a table of food in a train car and handed out plates to hungry commuters. Similarly, New York City restaurant Bea’s Kitchen delivered full Thanksgiving meals distributed to commuters in 2022, CBS News reported.

This week’s video, which has been viewed over 300,000 times on TikTok, sparked mixed reactions.

“This must be performance art,” one user said.

“The one where they celebrated Thanksgiving on the subway,” another user commented, referring to the hit sitcom “Friends,” set in the Big Apple.

“Legitimate question: Are there actually no rules in the New York subway?” another posted.

Food is not mentioned in the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Code of Conduct and Fines. However, the MTA does not allow “open fires” on the train. There appears to be a burning candle in the middle of the table, although it is unclear whether it was real or artificial.

Other TikTok users had questions for the organizers.

“What happens when it’s the last stop and they have to leave but haven’t finished their food yet?” one user asked

“How do you achieve this?” asked another.
