New Zealand vs England: Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson lead tourists in Hamilton

New Zealand fell short of their best in all series and once again found ways to gift wickets to the grateful tourists.

Young, player of the series in India’s 3-0 win, played for the first time in the series in place of Devon Conway, who is on paternity leave. Young immediately looked more confident and scored a nice goal through the offside.

Latham needed more luck and passed Ben Duckett twice at third slip. The opening stand was New Zealand’s best in 18 months and after Atkinson found an away move to put Young ahead, the Black Caps relented.

Rachin Ravindra’s flirtation with Brydon Carse ended in the hands of Gully, Daryl Mitchell spent 19 throws without success before a step-up from Atkinson was well handled by Stokes in the middle.

Blundell, who should have been caught at Joe Root’s first slip, somehow hit a long half-volley from Carse to the point where Jacob Bethell made an athletic catch over his head.

Apart from a blow to the head from Stokes, Santner took care of England’s short-ball plan and hit Carse for six. Henry helped Stokes to his own maximum and then found the fleet-footed Brook at the same moment.

With three sixes, Southee took his career tally to 98, joint fourth with Chris Gayle on the all-time list, before a side-swipe to Atkinson disappeared into the middle of the pitch. Another maximum from Santner over mid-on from Potts took him to an unbeaten 50 from 54 balls.
