NJ allocates funding to expand mental health services in all counties

The state has allocated $9 million for community wellness centers in all 21 counties, officials said Monday.

The money will be used to expand services, train staff and provide transportation to help underserved areas throughout New Jersey, the Department of Human Services announced.

“Community wellness centers are critical resources that provide innovative support, peer support, social services and education about mental health and substance use disorders – all free of charge,” said Sarah Adelman, state Human Services Commissioner.

“We are pleased to provide these grants to help expand their services to historically underserved areas and ensure employees are well supported,” she said.

The initiative, funded by the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, began this month and runs through June 2025.

The money will be used in a variety of ways, including providing more competitive salaries for support staff and providing transportation to life skills training for people with mental health disorders.

“It is important for people with substance use and mental health disorders to have access to a supportive environment where they can receive compassionate care and dignity from people in recovery themselves,” said Valerie Mielke, Deputy Commissioner of Health Services . These additional funds will make these important services available to additional underserved communities across the state.”

Expansion of services

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Trenton: $443,460 for Burlington County.
Center for Family Services: $383,420 for Warren County.
New Jersey Collaborative Assistance Programs: $608,190 each for Essex and Hudson counties.
Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris: $394,503 for Morris County and $314,450 for Sussex County.
Prevention Resources: $314,500 for Hunterdon County.
Mental Health Association of New Jersey: $510,277 for Atlantic County and $463,473 for Ocean County.
The Trenton Rescue Mission: $529,747 for Mercer County.
