No. 9 TCU dismantled Florida Atlantic 78-42

FORWARD WORTH – TCU reinforced its recently created No. 9 national ranking.

Playing their first-ever game as an AP Top 10 team, the Horned Frogs made easy work of Florida Atlantic, beating the Owls 78-42 at Schollmaier Arena.

TCU buried Florida Atlantic from the moment the ball dropped, going on a 14-0 run in the first 2:48 minutes of the midweek affair. The Frogs led by as many as 45 points late in the fourth quarter despite giving their starters a break in the final frame.

The win gave TCU its second straight 9-0 start under head coach Mark Campbell. It sets the stage for a monumental matchup on Sunday when the Frogs take on third-seeded and defending NCAA champion South Carolina (7-1) at Dickies Arena at 6 p.m. The game is the first top-10 matchup in program history and marks the first non-conference visit of the defending national champions to Fort Worth.

TCU shot an uncharacteristic percentage (30-76) from the field, but the periodic cold snaps didn’t help dismantle the Owls. The Horned Frogs, who continue to lead the nation in assists-to-turnovers ratio, assisted on 24 of their makes and committed just five turnovers. TCU also made 12 three-pointers.

Hailey Van Lith scored a game-high 16 points on an efficient 7-14 finish. She scored 12 of her points in the first half before playing the final seven minutes of the fourth quarter.

Reigning Big 12 Player of the Week Sedona Prince Van Lith joined Van Lith in double figures with 14 points and recorded five blocks. The performance marked the fifth time this season that the 6-7 center, who leads the nation in blocks, has stopped five or more shots.

Madison Conner And Taylor Bigby Each connected the city center three times with nine points each. TCU also benefited from 25 bench points, a team-leading seven of which came Knisha Godfrey in the third quarter.

Conner was on triple-double guard before Campbell held off the Dogs and gave TCU a 65-29 lead to start the final frame. With her three-point trio, she brought together eight rebounds and a game-leading seven assists and three steals.

Bigby had a season-high six assists, while Godfrey and Prince each had three assists.

TCU’s five turnovers were the second fewest in a game this year and it was the third time the Frogs gave the ball away five times or fewer.

With Wednesday’s result, the Horned Frogs secured their seventh win by at least 35 points.

In no time, the scoreboard read 14-0 TCU. Prince scored six points off three-pointers from Bigby and Conner before Van Lith capped the hot start with a dribble-drive layup.

TCU made one of its last 13 field goals in the first quarter, which was the only variable that allowed the Owls (5-3) to stay within striking distance early.

With the score 18-12 early in the second quarter, 3 points in a row from Conner and Aaliyah Roberson (6 points, 3 rebounds) Florida Atlantic doubled up to give TCU a double-digit lead that it never relinquished. TCU ended the quarter with a 17-2 run and took a 43-18 lead at halftime.

TCU held the Owls to a paltry 7:34 (20.6 percent) in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Frogs assisted on 15 of their 17 goals in the first half.

Godfrey’s seven-point streak in the third quarter pushed TCU further ahead, 61-29, with 1:39 remaining

Deasia Merrill And Donovyn Hunter scored six and five points respectively in a balanced final frame.

All 13 active players appeared for TCU, with nine players scoring at least five points.

TCU grabbed 49 rebounds, the second most in a game this season, and enjoyed a 28-12 points lead.
