No one regrets their offseason choice more than the Heat’s Caleb Martin

The Miami Heat watched Caleb Martin leave in free agency. He came to Miami on a two-way contract in 2021 after the Hornets waived him. Martin quickly worked his way into the rotation and played a key role in the Heat’s run to the NBA Finals in 2023. He turned down a five-year offer from Miami before signing with the 76ers at a cheaper price. Martin didn’t even give the Heat a chance to fulfill Philly’s deal.

The 6’5 wing is an entry point for the new-look Sixers, but it’s been a rough start. The signing of Paul George should make them title contenders. Instead, they are 5-14 and in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. Injuries have played a significant role, including Martin missing two games, but there have been plenty of problems on the pitch.

The Heat have their own issues, including dealing with Jimmy Butler trade rumors, but they are four games ahead of the Sixers. Martin would improve their chances, but he’s too busy fighting the NBA’s most disappointing team in Philadelphia.

Martin received a four-year, $32 million contract from the Sixers, $5 million less per year than Miami’s offer. Although he was given a starting role and more playing time, the 29-year-old has a negative value compared to the substitute player (VORP). He’s shooting just 40.0 percent from the field and 30.0 percent on his threes, his worst results since his time in Charlotte.

Martin transformed into a 3-and-D wing in Miami. He shot over 42 percent from 3-point range in the playoffs two years in a row and received starting minutes. The Heat will play Haywood Highsmith more often this season, but will definitely miss Martin’s performance.

The 76ers have an abysmal negative net rating of 12.4 with Martin on the field this season. Their offensive rating of 104.5 would be the worst in the NBA and their defensive rating would rank 24th. These are not ideal positions for a team that believes it can compete for a championship or for a player that is aiming for a strong playoff appearance.

Several teams in the East are struggling to start this season, leaving the door open for Philadelphia to get back into contention. They are just 2.5 games out of the play-in tournament and 4.5 games out of a guaranteed playoff spot. The Heat are part of that mix and are in a better position than the Sixers.

Things could get worse for Caleb Martin. His minutes may decrease if his play doesn’t improve. He came on as a substitute for the first time on December 3rd. The 6-foot-2 wing needed less money to play the same role on a worse team. Martin has to play better. He will still be jealous of the Miami Heat, but he has decided to reject their offer.
