Jacob Slocum is accused of leaving the Meijer at 6309 Lima Rd. with a speaker that he didn’t pay for, but instead scanned a UPC sticker for a pencil box, court records show. While he was coordinating the alleged theft, he was observed by asset protection officers.

As he left the store, employees, including a state trooper who worked part-time security for the store, attempted to stop Slocum.

“Don’t touch me,” Slocum yelled as he walked away from the officers.

Slocum then allegedly grabbed a gun, loaded a round and pointed it at the employees, court records show. He then fled the scene.

Employees and people in the parking lot ran for cover as the situation unfolded.

In a news release Tuesday, police said the “brazen act” was captured on video.

Members of the Indiana State Police, FWPD and North Manchester Police Department worked together to locate Slocum in a trailer in North Manchester, according to an ISP news release. ISP SWAT team members used several tactics to locate Slocum in the trailer, where he was armed with a weapon.

Police say he fired that weapon at SWAT members, who returned fire.

During the exchange, Slocum was injured. Life-saving measures were attempted and he was transported by rescue helicopter to a local hospital with serious injuries.

His current condition is unknown.

No officers were injured in the incident. Those involved in the shooting will be assigned administrative duties as part of the investigation into the incident, per standard protocol.

Slocum was charged with several crimes in connection with the alleged robbery, including:

  • Unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent offender;
  • Intimidation;
  • Pointing a firearm at another;
  • resisting law enforcement by drawing a weapon;
  • Criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon; And
  • theft

Allen County Magistrate Samuel Keirns issued an arrest warrant for Slocum on Thursday.
