NYPD officers shoot and kill murder suspect who pointed gun at officers with baby nearby: police

Authorities in New York say officers shot and killed a murder suspect on Thursday after he pointed a gun at them while in close proximity to a baby.

NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said the man, who he did not name, has been on the run for about nine months.

“He was wanted for a murder in March 2024,” Maddrey said at a news conference, describing the murder as “a particularly gruesome murder.”

Maddrey said preliminary investigations indicate that police responded to a call about shots fired in a Brooklyn neighborhood just before 3 p.m. He said a witness told officers a car with an out-of-state license plate hanging from a screw sped from the scene.

The police chief said officers caught up with the car, which continued to speed and run red lights. He said the car eventually got stuck in traffic and the driver was forced to stop.

“That’s when they realize there’s a driver (and) that someone is in the passenger seat,” Maddrey said of the officers, adding that the passenger tried to get out of the car but couldn’t because another car blocked the door.

The passenger then pointed a gun at the officers, prompting police to shoot him, Maddrey said. The driver, a woman, then ran out of the car and police shot her twice.

An officer then noticed a toddler in the car and began screaming “baby” and told the other officers to drop their weapons. He then got the baby from the back seat.

Maddrey said the woman was treated at a local hospital and later arrested. He added that the baby was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

None of the officers were injured.

“The men and women of this department are extremely brave and tonight we were very fortunate because they were at close range and the gun was definitely pointed at the officer,” Maddrey said, noting it was not immediately known whether it was The suspect fired his weapon.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, Maddrey said.

The chief said the investigation is ongoing.
