ForbesNYT ‘Connections’ Notes and Answers for Friday, January 24th

Hey, everyone! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

My weekend often includes soccer (it’s not called “football,” thank you very much), usually from the Premier League, Serie A, and sometimes MLS, given the streaming services I use. Unfortunately, my options for legally watching the Scottish Premiership here in Canada are slim or very expensive.

In truth, I like most sports. Darts is usually fun to watch, and I can even stand an NFL game from time to time. But there are a few that I just can’t really watch. For one thing, I’ve always found it deadly boring. I could never get into rugby either (although I always want Scotland to do well in the Six Nations!).

I used to watch some Formula 1, but I can’t really do motorsports anymore. It doesn’t help that there’s an F1 race in my neck of the woods every year and the city is very difficult to navigate for a few days. But hey, if you like it, that’s great! I appreciate the sport switching to more sustainable fuels.

Anyway, before we get started, I’ve started a discussion group for Connections and this column about discord. You can chat with me and other people about any game (and other topics). I’m always interested in finding out how other people approach the game, so join us! It’s fun.

It’s also the best way to give me feedback on the column, especially on the rare (!) occasions that I messed up a bit.

Today NYT Connections Hints and answers for Saturday, January 25th are coming soon.

How to play connections

Connections is a free, popular one New York Times Daily pun. You get a new puzzle every day at midnight. You can play on the NYT Website or gaming app.

They are presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by finding out the connections between them. The groups can be things like items you can click on, names for research study participants, or words preceded by a body part.

Each puzzle has only one solution, and you have to be careful when it comes to words that fit into more than one category. You can mix up the words to possibly help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the hardest. The purple group often includes puns.

Select four words that you think go together and press send. If you make a guess and are wrong, you lose a life. When you’re close to having a correct group, you may see a message telling you that there’s a word stopping you from getting it right, but you still have to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let’s make sure Connections Answer. Like with worm And in other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have one NYT Any Access or Games subscription will allow you to access the publication Connections Archive. This includes every previous game of ConnectionsSo you can go back and play any of the ones you missed.

My overall win streak is now at 13. Even better, I just logged my tenth perfect game. Here’s how it went for me:

🟩🟩🟩🟩

🟨🟨🟨🟨

🟦🟦🟦🟦

πŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺπŸŸͺ

A few possible red herrings, but I quickly saw through the mogul and tycoon traps and slope and angle.

I remembered that Mogul had something to do with skiing, so I was able to get to the greens without any problems. I also knew that Homeroom had something to do with schools in the USA at my high school. We had a 10-minute period at the beginning of the day where the number of visitors was taken and we received all the necessary important information. This was just called registration or “Reggie”.

I was pretty sure Ginkgo (a word I was completely unfamiliar with) had some sort of pun element to it. This became clearer when I looked at karaoke and emoji and realized that these were Japanese in origin. I guessed that tycoon was the remaining word and I was right.

I probably should have passed on the purple connection, but alas. Doesn’t matter. I’ll take a tenth perfect game.

That’s all there is for today Connections Hints and answers. Check my blog tomorrow for clues and the solution to Sunday’s game if you need it.

PS Since I used “Mull” in one of my clues yesterday I’ve been listening to a lot of Scottish band called Mull Historical Society. They’re not a group I think about very often these days, but they have some great songs. I really enjoyed seeing them live once in… a long time ago.

My favorite song of theirs is β€œAnimal Cannabus.” It’s a real treat and the video is a lot of fun:

The Mull Historical Society’s best-known song may be “Watching Xanadu.” I also dig this too:

I wish you a wonderful day! Stay hydrated! Call someone you love!
