Officers kill murder suspect in Suncoast Estates shooting

A murder suspect was killed after an exchange of gunfire with officers during a traffic stop near Suncoast Drive and Laurel Lane in Suncoast Estates. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, officers attempted to take the suspect into custody before he pointed a pistol and fired shots at officers. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Alphonso Neal. Neal was wanted for a shooting Saturday on Heck Drive that left one person dead and another injured. According to LCSO, officers were arresting him on a felony warrant when he fired a handgun at officers. LCSO said three officers then returned fire, ultimately killing Neal. No deputies were injured in the incident. The deputies involved are on paid administrative leave per agency policy. The arrest warrant for Neal included charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. According to LCSO, Neal was a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal record that included assault, vehicle theft and fleeing and eluding.
