Ohio State linebacker Gabe Powers announces plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal

Ohio State Linebackers Gabe Powers plans to enter the NCAA Transfer portalhe announced on Monday evening via X, formerly Twitter. Powers spent the last three seasons with the Buckeyes and has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-4 linebacker appeared in all 12 games this season and recorded five tackles, two passes defended and one interception. He returned that pick 29 yards for a touchdown in Week 1 against Akron.

“I would like to thank all of Buckeye Nation for the support I have received during my three years here at Ohio State,” Powers wrote in his announcement. “It has been a blessing to be part of Buckeye Nation. After much prayer and discussion with my family, I have decided that it is in my best interest to enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.”

Gabe Powers committed to Ohio State as a 2022 four-star prospect out of Marysville (OH) High School. He was the No. 115 player overall and No. 9 linebacker in the cycle according to the On3 Industry Rankinga weighted average that takes into account all four major recruiting media companies.

Powers appeared in just two games as a true freshman in 2022 to secure a redshirt season. He would play in all 12 games the next year, finishing with seven tackles, including one for a loss.

His announcement likely means he won’t finish the postseason with the Buckeyes waiting to find out their fate in the College Football Playoff. Powers can officially add his name to the portal when it opens on December 9th.

The transfer portal will remain open until December 28, although players from teams still playing in the postseason will be given an additional five-day window to enter the portal after the end of the season.

Powers is the first Ohio State player to enter the portal since the end of the regular season, but more are sure to follow in the coming weeks.
