The Edmonton Oilers have an impressive record of 7-2-1 in their last 10 games – and that’s without the goal help of Connor McDavid.

My Oilers vs. Kraken predictions have the captain overcoming his fear of scoring and leading the charge in another win for the Oilers.

Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for January 4th.

Oilers vs Kraken prediction

My Oilers picks
Connor McDavid Over 0.5 goals (+135 at BET99)

My Oilers analysis
The NHL’s best player is in the midst of a losing streak – at least when it comes to scoring goals. He has scored just one goal in his last 10 games and has gone six straight games without scoring, his longest streak of the season.

Connor McDavid has a unique opportunity to break that drought on Saturday night in Seattle. The Seattle Kraken play truly terrible defensive hockey at 5-on-5, ranking last in expected goals against and 27th in shot suppression over the last 10 games.

The Kraken also ranks last in shot distribution over the same period, meaning it spends a lot of time on its heels and absorbs many more shots than it generates.

That’s a recipe for disaster against McDavid. The Edmonton Oilers have controlled nearly 60% of shots in McDavid’s 5-on-5 minutes this season. That’s the best total on the team and places him 8th out of the 350 most played forwards in the NHL.

Given the Kraken’s defensive struggles, it’s unlikely they can stop McDavid from tilting the ice over the boards in his team’s favor seemingly every time. That should lead to plenty of scoring opportunities for McDavid.

It will be difficult for the Kraken to reliably parry these chances. Starter Joey Daccord suffered an injury and was unable to walk Friday, likely an indication that he still isn’t ready to return.

Daccord has performed admirably this season, posting a save percentage of .912 and placing in the top 10 in goals saved above expectations.

Things are completely different for Philipp Grubauer. The veteran goaltender has a save percentage of .877 and ranks 81st in the GSAE. Shooting him would be a big plus for McDavid.

McDavid also has an excellent track record against Seattle. He has punished them time and time again on the scoreboard and has scored in seven of the last ten meetings.

Bet99

Connor McDavid Over 0.5 goals

Zach Hyman Over 0.5 points

Edmonton Oilers money line

Zach Hyman started the season slowly, but now he is firing on all cylinders. Hyman has gotten on the scoresheet in 11 of his last 13 games, recording more multi-point attempts than zero points.

He plays shotgun with McDavid in both the 5v5 and power plays, giving him a strong correlation with McDavid. If 97 scores, there’s a good chance Hyman will join in on the fun.

Hyman has come out on top against the Kraken in recent meetings, scoring a total of 15 points in the last eight games.

Neither team is taking many penalties, so there should be a lot of 5-on-5 play in this game, which will certainly benefit the Oilers.

They have been one of the best teams in the league at full strength, while the Kraken have posted an xG percentage of 40.98% (31st) in their last 10 games.
